How to use AI as your food diary
Calorie apps make you search a database for every bite. AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can instead read a diary written in plain words, like "two eggs, toast and black coffee", and estimate calories, protein, carbs, fat and fiber, stating the portions they assumed.
The method
- Write everything down as you go, one line per thing: meals, drinks, supplements, workouts and how you feel.
- Add context once: age, height, weight, activity level and goals. Estimates for protein and calories depend on them.
- Ask a specific question about a specific period, such as "estimate my protein per day for the last 7 days and show the gaps".
- Ask for ranges, not exact numbers, and ask the AI to list its assumptions.
Questions that work well
- Estimate calories, protein, carbs, fat and fiber per day, with a weekly average.
- Compare my protein with common ranges for my weight and goal.
- What seems to lift or drain my energy? Cite the days.
- Plan tomorrow's meals from foods I already eat.
- Make a grocery list for next week with a few healthier swaps.
